泥土里生長出來的中國人在國破行將之際做出了匪夷所思卻令人尊敬的選擇。在外國人眼中，中國舊社會也有正面的一面。該片難免未完全逃脫美國電影體系，英雄主義的女主令人討厭，戲劇化的臺詞有些出戲，英語的使用就更不必多說，但在40年代，美國人能做出這番嘗試，很不錯了。
